The industry is still performing better than the comparison year 2020, but compared to the previous pandemic year 2021, the industry is now losing ground. In terms of value, overall white goods (MDA) and household appliances (SDA) are down 3.8 percent after the first five months of the year compared to the same period last year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The entire luxury goods trade is declining<\/h4>\n

The Trade Council within HUI today presented how the first quarter has progressed for the entire retail trade and notes that retail sales actually increased by 1.2 percent during the first quarter of 2022. However, they further note that the increase comes entirely from the food trade, which ended up at plus 3.2 percent. This growth is mainly driven by price increases.<\/p>\n

The retail trade in rare goods, on the other hand, had slightly negative growth of 0.1 percent. And the Trade Council notes that the negative growth was mainly driven by sales losses in the electronics and white goods trade as well as in the sports trade.x\u00a7<\/p>\n

The Trade Council finally notes that the grocery trade thus accounted for the entire growth in retail trade during the period. This meant that sales development in retail trade was entirely price-driven during the first quarter of the year.<\/p>\n

Major appliances (MDA) maintain annual pace<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Despite a relatively weak May for large white goods (-4.5 percent), all product segments (except 'refrigeration products' and 'microwave ovens') remain on the plus side with 0.6 percent in terms of value development in the first five months of this year. Dishwashers are in the best position with a plus of 10.3 percent compared to 2021. Microwaves have fared worse with a minus of 10 percent.<\/p>\n

Household appliances (SDA) have it tougher<\/strong><\/h4>\n

With the monthly value down 25 percent, the record sales of SDA during the pandemic years feel quite far away now\u2026 All major product segments are losing significantly in the month compared to the previous year's May. However, there are some small joys among the broken down product categories; kettles, hair dryers, large kitchen appliances\/assistants over 6 ltr capacity, slicers and vacuum packers, all of which show positive comparison figures compared to May last year.<\/p>\n
