March is the month of the waffle iron

Last year, just over 300,000 waffle irons were sold in Sweden and Prisjakt's monthly trends indicate that March is the month when the most irons are sold to Swedish households! APPLiAnytt has taken a closer look at the market and the supply!

In Prisjakt's report "Consumer Compass Q1 2022", 14 percent of respondents indicate that they intend to buy household appliances or white goods within the next three months, and right now Prisjakt users are particularly interested in wine coolers (+56 percent), washing machines (+54 percent), refrigerators (+38 percent), freezers (+37 percent), built-in ovens (+31 percent), microwave ovens (+29 percent) and dishwashers (+28 percent) - the percentage shows how much more popular the category was during January this year compared to an average month.

One thing that seems completely obvious, if you look at Pricehunter's monthly trends, is that it is in March that we buy waffle irons, since the figures for the category last year were -6 percent in January, -3 percent in February and +384 percent in March!

And it is true that the month of March is when the most waffle irons are sold annually in Sweden – more than in December, which is otherwise the peak month for most products – and last year, just over 300,000 waffle irons were sold in Sweden (according to APPLiA industry statistics, the number of waffle irons sold increased by 24 percent in 2021 compared to the previous year, which was a year when the number increased by 20 percent compared to 2019).

New waffle irons are not being launched at a breakneck pace, but the product cycles for these products are relatively long. Below are some examples of waffle irons that are currently available on the Swedish market.

Wilfa

Wilfa offers a wide range of waffle irons, with no less than eleven different products – single iron, double iron and waffle iron for Belgian waffles. The ”new” Hearts 23 (pictured above) was launched in 2018 and is a further development of Wilfa’s waffle iron Bell, which has been voted ”best in test” eight times. As a side note, it can be mentioned that the sister model to the Bell – Hjerte Stor – was named Christmas Gift of the Year 2005 in the Norwegian Electronics Industry.

OBH Nordica

OBH Nordica has five different waffle irons in its range – single iron, double iron and donut iron. The picture above shows the Elite Double.

Severin

Severin offers four models – a single iron, a double iron, an ice cream waffle iron and an iron for waffle fries (pictured above).

Electroscandia

Elektroskandia also has a waffle iron in its range, a double iron sold under the Emerio brand (pictured above).

Odd models

In addition to the quartet above, there are a number of other manufacturers of waffle irons, both traditional and a little more quirky – like the model above, where both the waffle iron and the waffle look like the Millennium Falcon spaceship from Star Wars…
