APPLiA's open letter to Sweden's incoming Minister of the Environment

Who will take office as Minister of the Environment is unclear at the time of writing - but whoever it is, they will have the opportunity to get off to a good start in their new role by having our open letter on their desk from the start.

Heavily criticized electronics tax

An understanding that today's heavily criticized electronics tax is counterproductive and only contributes to a decrease in trust in political environmental measures should be included in the new Minister of the Environment's job description. And a tough attitude towards the Ministry of Finance's hunger to rake in increased tax revenue from the electronics tax year after year should also be included.

APPLiA of course shares the ambition to reduce the occurrence of environmentally and health-hazardous chemicals and writes in the open letter: ”But a tax that makes goods more expensive for consumers, damages business and reduces jobs without some environmental results are not the right path. The industry has worked hard since its introduction to demonstrate the problems the tax causes, both for us and for the environment. Now we need your government's political support and commitment”".
