Reduced new construction in 2024

Statistics Sweden announces in its latest statistics on construction in Sweden that production of 28,350 apartments began in 2024. This represents a decrease of two percent compared to 2023 when 28,817 apartments began construction.

Apartment buildings increase slightly

Of the apartments that have been started, approximately 22,600 are in apartment buildings, including special housing. This is one percent more than in the corresponding period in 2023. Preliminary, approximately 70 percent are rental apartments, which can be compared with 71 percent for 2023.

Single-family homes down nine percent

The number of single-family homes started in 2024 amounted to 5,750 apartments, which is 9 percent fewer than in 2023.

Compared to previous years, total housing construction is at a low level, for example 50 percent below the figures from 2022.

One step away from the bottom

As the graph below shows, construction is currently at a rock bottom. There are signs that this trend is hopefully leveling off and that we will avoid the absolute rock bottoms we saw in 2008-2009.

Apartment construction starts 1975–2024

With a little extra oxygen to the market with lowered financing rates and lower cost increases for input goods, some analysts are predicting a cautious increase in construction in 2025. Keep your fingers crossed!
