Recycling in demand: most sought after on Blocket in household utensils and appliances

Recycling has never been as hot as it is now. But what is the difference between recycling and reuse? And what does the second-hand market for household appliances and white goods look like? APPLiAnytt asked the question to Sweden's largest trading platform for the second-hand market, Blocket.

APPLiAnytt has investigated the second-hand market for household items and appliances and what people are looking for most right now. Recycling is a growing trend and the lifespan of appliances and household products is long, something APPLiAnytt has reported on before. That's why we asked Ebba Rosencrantz, press officer at Blocket, what is in demand on the second-hand market right now and how it has been noticed at Blocket that we have spent more time at home during the pandemic.

During the pandemic, many people have spent more time in their homes and taken the opportunity to equip their kitchens. Is this also noticeable at Blocket?
– During corona, we saw increased activity at Blocket as many people spent a lot of time at home and wanted to clean, buy home furnishings and make things nice. People suddenly had time to fix and donate at home and maybe tackle a forgotten renovation project. The interest in upgrading the kitchen is noticeable, for example, in the price of dishwashers at Blocket. The median price of a dishwasher at Blocket has so far this year gone up by 12 percent compared to last year, says Ebba Rosencrantz.

Ahead of summer, is there anything in the category of white goods and household appliances that is in particularly high demand on the second-hand market?
– We can see that summer has also arrived for white goods at Blocket. People are now looking for countertop dishwashers and small, handy dishwashers that can fit in the summer cottage. Classic summer gadgets such as party coolers and mini fridges for the boat, for example, are also popular right now, says Ebba.

With recycling refers to the process where collected recycled material replaces new raw material in the production of new products. Reuse is extends the life of a product by putting the product, or its components, back on the market, which inhibits new production and consumption of new goods.
