Market after seven months in 2024 – minus 12.8 %

On an annual basis until July, the entire APPLiA market's sell-in value for white goods and household appliances is down 12.8 percent compared to the same period in 2023. Now, it is mainly the larger household appliances (MDA) that show a tendency in July to approach last year's figures. Household appliances (SDA) are also starting to regain volume.

In comparison, we see that the total figures in Statistics Sweden's reports for the development of non-durable goods retail during the summer months have been up and down; June minus 0.7 percent and July plus 1.2 percent - all according to Statistics Sweden's monthly reports for the development of total retail trade.

There are now individual reports from the trade that consumer sales in particular have at least regained some momentum after the strong expectations of the Riksbank's interest rate cuts in August and later this autumn. However, deliveries of white goods for new housing construction are still at a low level, as the completion of new housing has slowed down significantly.

Sdry appliances (MDA) continue to lose volume

The volume development of the different product segments in terms of number sold compared to the previous year is shown in the graphs above. "Cooling", which includes all types of refrigerators, freezers, fridge/freezers, wine cabinets, etc., is the group that has fallen the most so far this year, by 23 percent. In terms of value, things look slightly better for this product segment (minus 19%).

A positive feature in the statistics for the month of July alone is that the segments kitchen hoods and washer and dryers show positive figures for both volume and value compared to the month of July 2023. Fans with a plus of 27 percent and washer/dryer plus 5 percent. Always something to be happy about!

Household appliances regain volume

Small household appliances (SDA) have lost a lot of value during the summer months but have recovered in terms of delivered volumes. While the value for the first seven months of the year is down by just over 11 percent, the total number is up by plus 1.5 percent.

The product segment that is performing the best within SDA compared to last year is ”ironing” (which includes steam irons and steamers), as well as the categories large kitchen appliances/assistants and ”toasters/grills” within the ”kitchen appliances” segment.

The SDA figures have in some respects been affected by some corrections to the 2023 figures, which have now been made retrospectively.
