Waffle Day March 25

We are now celebrating Waffle Day, which has its roots in a wonderful Swedish tradition that goes back centuries. Originally, March 25th was known as ”Spring Day” – a religious holiday that celebrated the Annunciation. The words sound very similar (Spring Day/Waffle Day) if said quickly.

This gave us Swedes reason to start a welcome celebration in honor of the waffle in the way we recognize it today. But we are not alone – in our neighboring countries the custom is similar. And even out in Europe – who has not enjoyed Belgian waffles in Brussels or Austrian ”Waffeln” at a ski resort in the Alps.

There is therefore a wide range of different types of waffle irons throughout Europe. So no matter what type of waffles you prefer – be it thin crispy or thicker, hearty waffles, Belgian waffles or yummy ice cream waffles – waffle lovers can always find a good waffle iron for it.

In 2025, sales of electrically heated waffle irons in Sweden increased by a full 25 percent. In addition, a lot of waffle irons are sold that are heated directly on the stovetop, wood stove or over an outdoor fire. So the conditions for a truly nationwide waffle day look good.
