The world's first washing machine with a microfiber filter

Grundig has launched the GWP 89619 WW as the world's first washing machine with an integrated microfiber filter, which reduces the release of microplastics into the water.

According to Grundig, we ingest up to 250 grams of microplastics annually and they believe it is time for change – now we can start by breaking the microplastic cycle in the home.

Every time you wash your synthetic clothes, tiny microfibers are released into the water and eventually make their way to the ocean where they can cause significant environmental damage. At the end of the cycle, the microplastics end up in our food, and we ingest them.

Grundig has now created a washing machine with a built-in microfiber filter that helps stop the microplastic cycle for every synthetic wash cycle.

Grundig says that the FiberCatcher technology is only activated for the Synthetics, Shirts and Sportswear/Goretex washing programs to ensure that only synthetic microfibers – which are currently the biggest problem for the ocean – are filtered out and do not end up in our oceans.

According to Grundig, the contamination of wastewater with microfibers is reduced by up to 90 percent with FiberCatcher technology.

The FiberCatcher filter is made from 98 percent recycled material and is designed to last up to six months (26 uses). When the filter is full, the FiberCatcher light will flash when one of the applicable programs is selected, indicating it is time to recycle the filter and replace it with a new one.

Grundig's GWP 89619 WW washing machine has a capacity of 9 kg and energy label A. The outer drum is made of recycled PET bottles, while the inside of the drum has an Aquawave pattern that is supposed to be extra gentle on the clothes. In addition to the traditional programs, it also has programs such as Supreme Refresh where steam is used to remove wrinkles, a sports program for workout clothes/Goretex and HygienCare, which is said to kill bacteria and viruses.

Open technology

Arcelik, the company behind the Grundig brand, showed off a washing machine with a microfiber filter back in 2019 and the plan was to launch the product in 2020. However, the pandemic has delayed the launch and it is only now that Arcelik and Grundig have made the technology available to consumers. Arcelik has also made its technology available to its competitors in the hope of further innovation.

”As a company with a global footprint, with products and services in 146 countries, we made it our mission to do everything in our power to make a difference as time runs out in the fight against environmental disasters in general and climate disasters in particular,” says Hakan Burgurlu, CEO of Arcelik.
