75 percent of those trained have already obtained jobs

The first graduating class of APPLiA's YH training for service technicians will graduate on January 21st next week. Of the eight people who are now completing the training, six have already found jobs in their LIA positions, which is a good mark for both students, trainers and the companies that offered internships.

Next week, on January 18, students will be examined on their degree projects (essays) in elective subjects that are the final course. The degree projects cover the following areas:

  • Reuse of white goods
  • Freezer and refrigerator service, troubleshooting and repair
  • Energy efficiency of smarthome villas with natural draft as a ventilation system
  • Home automation
  • IT security in smart homes
  • Smart home products and solutions
  • Smart homes without the manufacturer's own gateway
  • Home security and automation with a focus on door automation/security solutions
  • Low Power Radio (LoRa), IoT protocols and LoRaWAN networks

For those who want to take the opportunity to take part in one/some of the degree theses, it is possible to contact the office to receive a link to the meeting.

We continue to believe that class number two, with more students, will do at least as well.

Background:

APPLiA is driving the issue of training more service technicians for our industry. The need for more service technicians continues to increase, partly due to the fact that many technicians are approaching retirement age and partly due to new technology that means that technicians with different skills are in demand as a result of more connected products and complex home networks, where our household products must be securely connected together with consumers' other products.

We also see a political will for more products to be repaired, where new legislation such as eco-design, increased RUT deductions and chemicals tax are aimed at increased repairability and reduced consumption.

During a 5-year period in the early 2010s, APPLiA ran YH training courses and in 2019, APPLiA applied to start a YH training course for service technicians as the need for technicians continued to increase. The training was granted and the first class of service engineers with a focus on Connected Homes will graduate in January 2021 after completing a 1.5-year education. The vocational school is a post-secondary education level with a focus on being able to enter employment directly in companies.
