The grill thermometer – the ultimate accessory

A grill thermometer, or roasting thermometer as it is also called, is very useful when cooking. There are also a variety of different types to choose from – in a price range that ranges from fifty kronor to several thousand kronor.

Many ovens today increasingly have a meat thermometer integrated. Depending on the oven, you can also get different amounts of help from it – for example, via a notification on your mobile phone when the food has reached the correct temperature.

The latest flagship ovens on the market have also implemented artificial intelligence and algorithms to adapt baking and roasting results to personal preferences. By setting the desired crust finish, the oven can use a camera, sensors and intelligent algorithms to notify you when the desired result has been achieved via a notification on your phone or tablet. The technology makes baking and cooking easier, more flexible and can hopefully prevent the occasional burnt baking sheet in the future.

The grill thermometer is flexible

One advantage of a grill thermometer that is not integrated into an oven, or into a grill, is that it can be used anywhere – in the oven, grill, Airfryer, Sous vide and slow cooking, etc.

The range of grill thermometers is large and ranges from analog models for fifty kronor, through digital corded variants that cost from a couple of hundred kronor and up, to wireless models with all sorts of functions and associated apps, with a price tag north of a thousand kronor.

Wireless novelty that can withstand 500 degrees

According to the company's website, Meater has sold 40 million wireless thermometers since its introduction in 2016, and now they are launching a further developed model, called Meater 2 Plus, which is smaller, more accurate and can withstand much higher temperatures.

The waterproof thermometer is equipped with five internal sensors and one external sensor. The internal sensors can withstand temperatures up to 105 degrees and the external one can withstand 500 degrees (compared to 275 degrees previously), which means that the thermometer can be used in the hottest of grills and over open fires, which according to the company makes the product completely unique on the market.

The thermometer communicates wirelessly with the wooden charging station, which in turn communicates with Bluetooth 5.2 to the user's mobile phone. If a longer range is desired than the maximum 75 meters achieved with Bluetooth, the Meater Link WiFi and Meater Cloud can be used for wireless network use.

The charging station contains a AAA battery that is said to be enough to charge the thermometer's internal battery for two years (if used once a week) and in 15 minutes it charges to 50 percent, which means you can use the thermometer for 12 hours.

Somewhat cumbersome pasteurization

”"We made our own apple cider last fall, and to make it last longer, we pasteurized it in a large saucepan. So we heated the apple cider to 75 degrees and let it stay at that temperature for a quarter of an hour.". Since our only meat thermometer is the Weber iGrill 3 that is permanently mounted on the grill, the grill cart was rolled into the kitchen. Next year the process will be smoother, as Santa Claus will give me a Meater 2 Plus as a Christmas present this year… ” – Ola Larsson, writer Applia Sweden
