Meet Samuel, former student at Connected home

Samuel Nielsen is a former student at the University of Technology's YH program Service Engineer Connected Home, which APPLiA has helped develop and is also involved in. Samuel graduated in January this year and we spoke to him to hear more about what he learned and what he thinks about no more people being accepted to the program.

Hi Samuel, you have trained as a service engineer in the Connected Home course. Tell us why you applied for the course?

– After about 20 years as a sound engineer at concerts, of which about 15 years as a touring sound engineer for various artists and bands, I felt it was time to be more at home with my family. I thought for several years about what would entice me to change industries.

While I was on parental leave, the Covid pandemic hit, which was a huge blow to my old industry. I realized that this would be around for a long time, and that's when the idea of continuing my studies seriously came to mind.

The Connected Home training appeared in my Facebook feed and immediately a seed was sown that this was the right training for me.

What did you learn?

– The training is very broad, it was everything from installing safe water, home security which included training in burglar alarms to how everything in white goods works and how it is repaired and works in connection with cybersecurity. We also got to read about design and training in human knowledge.

What was the best and what did you think was missing from the training?

– The best thing about the training was the breadth of knowledge we gained. I didn't miss much. However, things were added after my training was completed, such as the new protocol for "smart home matter", which I believe will become a major player in the market. It will be exciting to see if the appliance industry goes in that direction.

What are you working on today?

– Today I work as a security technician at Certego in Västerås, focusing on access systems, alarms and CCTV. But I closely follow developments in smart homes. We are facing a truly exciting future.

Unfortunately, there will be no new intakes of students for this program, what do you think about that?

– I really think it's a shame and can't understand why. Especially considering the "internet of things" and, for example, all the connected white goods and alarm products that are emerging. In other words, there is a great need for well-trained personnel in the market.
