Now over 5 million households in Sweden
The number of households in Sweden continues to increase and has now passed five million for the first time. Single-family homes are the most widespread form of housing, followed by rental housing in apartment buildings.

Statistics Sweden's annual report on the number of households in Sweden shows an increase. At the end of 2025, the number of households in Sweden amounted to just over five million, a total of 5,002,600. This represents an increase of approximately 30,600 households compared to the previous year, which corresponds to a growth of just under one percent. The most common form of housing was single-family homes with ownership rights, where 38 percent of households lived. This was followed by rental apartments in apartment buildings, which accounted for 29 percent, while 21 percent lived in tenant-owned apartments. The average living space in the country was 42 square meters per person.
